United Airlines: Busy November, but travelers wary of advance bookings

Shares of United Airlines Holdings Inc. added to gains Monday after the airline said it expected the week of Nov. 23, Thanksgiving week, to be its busiest since March. Half of the travelers are booking their flights less than 30 days before their departure dates, compared with last year, when about 40% of Thanksgiving travelers made their reservations less than 30 days before departure. United said it expects to see the same pattern of booking flights closer to departure dates in December. United said it expects to fly 48% of its overall schedule in December compared to 2019. Shares of United have lost 56% this year, contrasting with gains around 11% for the S&P 500 index. Airlines have gone through deep capacity cuts and other cost-cutting measures to remain in business during the pandemic.
