The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus illness COVID-19 in the U.S. topped 8 million early afternoon Friday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University, as the death toll headed toward 218,000. The global tally now stands at 39.1 million and 1.1 million people have died. With 4% of the global population, the U.S. accounts for about 20% of global cases and more than 20% of global deaths.
