Stocks trim losses but end lower as jobless claims rise

/ / News

Stocks trimmed an early decline, but major benchmarks still logged a third straight day of losses after a rise in first-time jobless claims underlined worries about a stalling economic rebound. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day with a loss of around 20 points, or 0.1%, near 28,494. The blue-chip gauge fell by more than 300 points in early action, but bounced off lows and briefly traded in positive territory late afternoon. The S&P 500 fell around 5 points, or 0.2%, to end near 3,483, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined around 55 points, or 0.5%, to finish near 11,714.
