/ / News

AppleApple Inc. AAPL revealed a smaller HomePod smart speaker at a virtual launch event Tuesday. The Siri-enabled HomePod mini has a more spherical design than the original HomePod and comes in either a white or space gray mesh casing. It starts shipping the week of Nov. 16, with orders beginning Nov. 6. The device will cost $99. Apple said that multiple HomePod devices in the house will be able to play music in sync, while two placed in the same room will be able to pair up for stereo-quality audio. The HomePod mini will be able to recognize the voices of different family members and personalize the daily updates it gives to each speaker. The device can also be used as an intercom for households. Apple said that the device will be compatible with Apple Music and eventually Pandora and Amazon.com Inc.’s AMZN Amazon Music, but the company made no mention of Spotify Technology SA SPOT, which has argued that Apple’s music-streaming practices violate antitrust rules. Apple shares are down 1.2% in Tuesday afternoon trading.
